Gender imbalance in Bangladesh's Garment Sector

New findings from garment factories in Bangladesh show that while four of every five production workers are female, only one in 20 supervisors is a woman. How is it that 95%  of the management talent comes from just 20% of the workforce? A joint International Growth Centre (IGC) and DEGRP policy brief summarises new evidence from a study that examined this very question as well as ways to enhance firm productivity in the ready-made garment sector in Bangladesh.

This research has been carried out by IGC researchers, the DFID-ESRC Growth Research Programme, IPA’s SME Initiative and GIZ.
